Meliksetov Alexey Alekseevich is a copyist-artist and a grandfather of our ward Natasha Pilkova.

A note about the copyist-painter

History: In Soviet times, Meliksetov Alexey Alekseevich actively participated in many artist competitions. He received gratifying letters from Cuba and France very often. At that time, his two paintings were accepted; they were a portrait of Brezhnev and a poster For Peace in the World.  It happened that Maliksetov was a portrait artist. Creating portraits of Politburo members and propaganda posters was in strong demand at that time. A. A. Meliksetov was benefited.

After Brezhnev’s passing away, painting portraits ceased to be in demand. Earning his living became a challenging task.
After many years, having retired already, Alexey Alekseevich has taken a paint-brush in his hand again.

18 years ago A. A. Meliksetov participated in a competition. A competition was to create a best symbol of Tula; and he won..

Meliksetov Alexey Alekseevich has never been selling his pictures. He would only give them as a present. He is an outstanding copyist; however, his years have subdued him. He has being painting his latest picture (copying Orlov’s picture, “Autumnal Festival”) for several years. He is losing his eyesight, his hands is beginning trembling.
On having learned about his granddaughter’s disease and about a chance of her recovering, he has felt pain and fear. The painter lives in poverty and is not able to help with anything.
To save Natasha, Alexey Alekseevich put all his efforts in finishing his picture. “Autumn Festival” has been painted. Now, in order to get some money to pay for treating his granddaughter Natasha, Alexey Alekseevich is attempting to sell this and another picture he gave to his granddaughter earlier,.
The two pictures, which are copies of masterpieces of world-famous artwork, are “Autumnal Festival” painted by P.N. Orlov and “The Repentant Magdalen” painted by Titian.

Orlov Pimen Nikitich was a artist (1812 - 1863), and a serf's son. He somehow got acquainted with painting by taking lessons. He took lessons from a wandering painter and started going about Ukraine, formerly called Malorussia, and painting icons and portraits for landowners, and sometimes he painted floors and roofs; then he became a free student at Emperor Academy of Arts, where K. Brulov became his mentor.

The painter P.N. Orlov settled down in Rome in 1841, where he had well-earned image of a perfect portraitist. He achieved even greater fame by creating his pictures on Italians’ lives.  They were “Autumn Festival” (The Rumiantsev Museum), “A Girl Going Home From Harvest-Work” (The Rumiantsev Museum), “A Young Roman Girl At A Fountain” (bought by the Emperor Nicolay I), “Morning In Italy” (the same), “A Scene Of Rome Carnival” (owned by Academy of Arts), “Repentance Of The Ruffian” etc.
Pimen Nikitich Orlov was a very well known portrait artist in his day. His works rarely come to auction. Soloviev notes that in 1838 Orlov won a Silver Medal for his paintings, and many of his paintings went into the Czar's collection. Orlov's paintings are in the permanent collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery
P.N. Orlov being stayed in Italy to his last days, was, however, elected Academician in 1857.

“The Repentant Magdalen” (the original is painted by Titian)

On January 24-th 2008, “The Repentant Magdalen” painted by Renaissance genius Tiziano Vecellio (known as Titian) was sold at "Sotheby", New York for $4.521 million.  They assessed this classic chef-d'oeuvre (masterpiece) prior to selling and the estimated price was from $4 to 6 million.
Tician’s Magdalen, initially intended for Spanish King Philip II in 1560s, caused such a commotion that it was sold for 100 gold ducats to one Italian rich man. That was a vast sum of money at that time. The second master’s copy was created for the King, and overall at least 3 copies of “The Repentant Magdalen” were known. One of them is owned by the Hermitage Museum Collection since 1850 and it was bought from Barbarigo Family, who got it in 1581.
The picture exhibited for sale at "Sotheby" is owned now by a private collector whose name was withheld. As far as it was known, “The Repentant Magdalen” started its history from the 17-th century collection owned by Dutch Martin Kretzer.
